The Wind Up Doll / عروسک کوکی

by Sarah Kivi

The Wind-Up Doll is a 3D sound installation exhibited in May, 2018 at Funkahaus Berlin as part of my studies at Catalyst Institute.

The installation is inspired by radio drama, experimental audio recording techniques, audience experience and spoken word and aims to brings to life the Iranian poem by creating a scene where the listener experiences the poems main character as if they shared a space together, this has been achieved by binaural recording techniques and by placing them in a installation that correlates spatially with the audio they are experiencing playing with the listeners perception of what is really happening in the room and what is happening in the playback. The presence of the character moving throughout the space drinking tea, playing piano and smoking cigarettes relates to the poem pulling the listener ever closer while providing them with minimal visual triggers aruond them such as a pair of heels or an ashtray.

Forough Farrokhzad is considered to be the most influential contemporary female poet of 20th century in Iran. Her poetry challenged social systems and hierarchies by rebelling against what was considered the norm for female expression in Iran at the time. The motif ‘Kun Hämärtää’ (Twilight Time), which is heard in the beginning and end of the installation, by Finnish singer Laila Kinnunen (1939-2000) builds a bridge between cultures pointing out that loneliness experienced by women is universal.
